EMPRO

EMPRO (European Microbicides Project) is an international research network of 25 partners spread throughout Europe and Africa, composed of Universities, research institutes and biotechnology companies and led by Kings College London, UK.

EMPRO’s scientists aim to develop the first microbicide drugs that enable women in developing countries to protect themselves against HIV infection during sexual intercourse in a self-determined way and to give them a greater choice and control of their sexual health. A further target of EMPRO’s scientists is to produce the microbicide drugs in a cheap and efficient way, even in countries without advanced pharmaceutical factories.

The project is funded by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme in the Priority “Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health”. EMPRO started in 2004 for the duration of five years.
