BLOODOMICS

Bloodomics is one of the greatest European projects in the research of heart disease. The project involves over 180 researchers of seven different European countries and is co-operating with institutions such as the British and Dutch Heart Foundations, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge and national blood services.

Bloodomics is of high interest for a large part of the European population since Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the major cause of premature death in Europe and developing countries. Recent studies showed that an increased risk of suffering a heart attack or cardiovascular diseases in general can be genetically caused and identified in individuals’ markers in platelets. Therefore, Bloodomics’ scientists investigate the way these platelets function. The results of the project aim to lead to the design of better prevention policies and therefore to improved guidance of people at risk towards healthier lifestyles.

Bloodomics is funded by the European Union with 9 Million Euro within the Sixth Framework Programme over the duration of four years.
